▊Operation & Maintenance- Liya 26FT RHIB For Rescue, Patrol, and Other Water Missions etc.
1. Pre-Operation Safety and Preparation
Before any voyage, thorough preparation is essential to ensure the safety of personnel and the boat.
Weather and Operational Briefing: Before operations, obtain the latest forecast information on wind, tide, wave height, and daylight hours. Assess if the conditions are suitable for your specific mission profile.
Crew and Passenger Briefing: All personnel must be briefed before departure. This includes instructing them where to sit, how to wear their life jacket correctly, and what to do during the voyage. Emphasize that all occupants must sit on the provided seats or the floor, keeping their waist level below the gunwales for stability and safety.
Pre-Embarkation Checks:
Boat Seaworthiness: Check the hull, inflatable tubes, and all through-hull fittings for integrity.
Drain Plugs (Bungs): Ensure all drain plugs are securely in place before launching.
Fuel: Verify you have sufficient fuel for the mission plus a minimum reserve of one-third. Check for leaks and ensure tanks are secure.
Load and Trim: Distribute the load of personnel and mission equipment (e.g., gun racks, boarding ladders) evenly to maintain a low center of gravity and good trim. Ensure there is sufficient freeboard for the sea conditions.
Essential Equipment: Check the serviceability and stowage of all required equipment, including a sufficient number of approved, undamaged Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) for everyone on board. Confirm that communication devices, navigation lights, and the bilge pump are operational.
Engine Start-Up: Ensure the engine starts easily and check for normal water flow from the cooling system.
2. Safe Operational Procedures
Safe handling requires constant attention to the boat, environment, and crew.
Speed and Maneuvering: Operate at a speed appropriate to the conditions, regulations, and your mission. The deep-V, stepped hull of your boat is designed for stability in rough water, but you must avoid high-speed turns or violent maneuvers that could throw personnel or equipment. Always reduce speed when approaching landings or operating near other boats, swimmers, or in flooded areas to minimize wake damage.
Rules of the Road and Awareness: Strictly obey nautical rules of the road. Maintain a sharp lookout for other boats, swimmers, floating debris, and submerged or semi-submerged hazards like fences, power lines, or rocks, which are especially dangerous in flood operations. Be aware of water flow patterns; stationary "V" shaped ripples or waves often indicate underwater obstructions.
Critical "Do Not" Rules:
Do not overload the boat or stand up while it is underway unless necessary for observation. If movement is required, keep low and hold on.
Do not permit horseplay.
Do not operate the boat or allow crew to operate under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Do not use PFDs as seats or cushions, as this can damage them.
Special Conditions:
Reversing: Avoid reversing in shallow water where the propeller is at high risk of striking submerged objects.
Fast Currents & Flood Water: When crossing currents, do so at an angle rather than directly to maintain better control. Approach jetties or obstacles from downstream if possible. Be extremely cautious of whirlpools, "water curl back" at weirs, and changing water levels that can alter hazards rapidly.
Emergency Response: Have and practice emergency plans for man-overboard, fire, and abandon ship situations. Remember, a swamped or capsized RIB is designed to remain afloat; it is often safer to stay with the boat while awaiting rescue.
3. Post-Operation and Maintenance
Systematic maintenance preserves the boat's mission-ready status and safety.
Post-Operation Checks: After use, thoroughly rinse the entire boat, especially the engine and all metal components (like stainless-steel fittings), with fresh water. Flush the engine cooling system as per the manufacturer's instructions. Check for any new damage, wear, or leaks that may have occurred during operations.
Scheduled Maintenance:
Hull and Tubes: Regularly inspect the fiberglass hull for cracks, gouges, or osmotic blisters. Clean the inflatable tubes with approved cleaners and protect them from UV degradation. Check tube pressure frequently, as specified by the manufacturer.
Engine and Systems: Adhere strictly to the engine manufacturer's service schedule for oil changes, filter replacements, and gearcase lubrication. Inspect steering, throttle, and shift control systems for smooth operation and corrosion. Test the bilge pump and all electrical systems regularly.
Safety Gear: Service and inspect all safety equipment, including fire extinguishers, flares, and PFDs. Replace any expired or damaged items immediately.
Record Keeping: Maintain a detailed log of all operations, inspections, maintenance performed, and parts replaced. This is crucial for professional duty boats to track wear patterns and plan preventative maintenance.
