Safety Operation

The safe operation of your FRP boat requires preparation, situational awareness, and adherence to fundamental rules.

Pre-Departure Checks (The "Do" List):

• Weather:

  Always obtain the latest forecast for wind, waves, and tides before departure. Never exceed the limitations of your boat or your experience.

• Boat & Systems:

  Verify the boat is seaworthy. Check that the engine starts easily, the electrical system is functional, and the bilge pump is operational.

• Fuel:

  Ensure you have sufficient fuel for your trip plus a minimum one-third reserve. Be aware of your engine's fuel consumption under load.

• Loading & Stability:

  Never overload the boat. Distribute all weight (passengers, gear) evenly to keep the boat in good trim and the center of gravity low. Ensure there is adequate freeboard for the conditions.

• Safety Equipment: 

  Confirm you have a correctly sized, serviceable Personal Flotation Device (PFD) for every person on board. Brief all passengers on where to sit and how to wear their PFD. Ensure other mandated safety gear (fire extinguisher, visual signals, sound-producing device) is accessible and in date.

Underway Procedures:

• Speed & Wake:

  Operate at a safe and controlled speed appropriate for conditions, traffic, and visibility. Be aware that your wake can cause damage or injury.

• Passenger Management:

  All occupants must be seated on provided seats or the deck. They must not sit on the gunwales, bow deck, or stand while the boat is moving.

• Ventilation & Fumes:

  Gasoline vapors and carbon monoxide are deadly. Maintain good cockpit ventilation. Run blowers if equipped. Be alert for fumes, especially from the engine compartment.

• Rules of the Road:

  Obey all navigational rules and local regulations.

Critical "Do Not" List:

• Do not operate the boat, or allow others to operate it, under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

• Do not permit horseplay or reckless behavior on board.

• Do not make high-speed turns or sudden maneuvers.

• Do not use PFDs as seat cushions or fenders, as this can damage them.

Special Considerations for Offshore & Fishing Use:

• Lifejacket Policy:

  Develop a clear "Lifejacket Wear Procedure" for various tasks (e.g., fishing, working on deck). As demonstrated by professional fisheries, wearing a lifejacket should be mandatory during high-risk activities like working on the bow, in rough weather (e.g., over 20 knots of wind), or when operating alone.

• Man Overboard (MOB):

  Have a plan and practice it. Key controls include: immediately reducing engine revs, throwing a life ring or buoyant object, assigning a spotter, and executing a safe recovery approach.

• Communication:

  For offshore trips, a VHF radio and an **Emergency Position Indicating Radio Beacon (EPIRB)** are essential beyond visual range of land.

Inspection & Maintenance

Regular maintenance is critical for safety, performance, and longevity. FRP hulls are durable but require specific care.

Hull & Gel Coat (Monthly/After Each Use):

• Cleaning: Wash with fresh water and mild soap to remove salt and contaminants. Avoid harsh abrasives that can scratch the gel coat.

• Inspection: Look for new cracks, gouges, or blistering (osmosis). Pay special attention to areas of high stress: near fittings, strakes, and the transom. Early detection of damage is key to simple repairs.

• UV Protection: Apply a quality marine wax or UV-protectant polish regularly to shield the gel coat from sun degradation.

Mechanical & Systems (Before Each Use & Per Schedule):

• Engine: Follow the engine manufacturer's maintenance schedule strictly for oil changes, filter replacements, and cooling system flushing. Use the correct fuel grade as specified.

• Steering & Controls: Check for smooth, full-range operation of steering and throttle/shift controls. Look for corrosion or stiffness in cables.

• Electrical: Inspect battery terminals for corrosion, ensure connections are tight, and check charge levels. Verify all navigation lights, the bilge pump (automatic and manual), and other circuits function correctly.

• Bilge: Keep the bilge clean and free of oil or debris. Ensure the bilge pump intake is not clogged.

Annual/Seasonal Maintenance:

• Through-Hull Fittings & Seacocks: Operate all seacocks to ensure they are not frozen. Check for leaks or corrosion.

• Trailer: Inspach trailer tires, bearings, lights, and winch. Rinse the trailer frame to prevent rust.

• Professional Inspection: Consider an annual check by a marine technician for systems you are not qualified to assess.

FRP-Specific Repairs:

Minor scratches or gouges in the gel coat can be repaired with a marine-grade gel coat patch kit to prevent water ingress.

For any structural damage (cracks, holes), or if you are unsure, consult a professional FRP repair technician. Proper repair requires specific materials and techniques to restore strength and integrity.

Emergency Preparedness

• Drills: Practice man overboard and fire drills with your regular crew.
