Pre-Departure Safety Checks and Preparation

A safe journey begins with thorough preparation before leaving the dock.

• Weather and Planning: Always check the marine weather forecast. Assess wind, wave conditions, and tides to ensure they are suitable for your planned activity and the experience level of all on board. File a float plan with someone ashore, detailing your destination and expected return time.

• Passenger Briefing: Before departure, brief all passengers. Show them the location and proper use of life jackets (PFDs), explain basic safety rules (e.g., remaining seated while the boat is moving, holding on), and point out emergency equipment like the fire extinguisher and first-aid kit.

• Boat Inspection:

  Hull and Tubes: Visually inspect the fiberglass hull for damage and ensure the inflatable tubes are firm and free from significant abrasions or cuts.

  Drain Plugs: Verify that all self-draining deck plugs and transom drain plugs are securely in place.

  Safety Gear: Ensure you have a correctly sized, serviceable USCG-approved life jacket for every person on board. Verify that all required safety equipment (fire extinguisher, visual distress signals, sound-producing device, throwable flotation device) is present, accessible, and in good condition.

  Load and Balance: Distribute passengers and gear evenly to maintain a stable trim. Do not exceed the maximum person capacity (10) or maximum weight capacity. Secure all loose gear in the storage compartments.

Safe Operation Procedures On the Water

Once underway, continuous vigilance and responsible handling are key.

• Starting and Idling: Start the engine in neutral with proper ventilation. Allow it to idle briefly to warm up while checking for normal water flow from the cooling system tell-tale.

• Speed and Awareness: Operate at a safe, controlled speed, especially in crowded areas, near shore, or in poor visibility. • Rules of the Road: You are the captain and must understand and follow nautical "Rules of the Road" regarding right-of-way, meeting, crossing, and overtaking situations.

Essential Safety Rules:

• Life Jackets Are Mandatory: The best practice is for everyone to wear their life jacket at all times while on the water. This is non-negotiable for children and non-swimmers.

• Designated Driver: Never operate the boat under the influence of alcohol or drugs. Designate a sober skipper.

• Secure Movement: Passengers must remain seated while the boat is at planning speed. Use handholds when moving about.

• Respect the Environment: Obey no-wake zones and avoid disturbing wildlife.

• Emergency Preparedness: Know how to respond to critical situations: shut off the fuel supply in case of fire, know how to use your VHF radio to call for help (Channel 16), and understand basic man-overboard recovery procedures. Practice turning the boat quickly to return to a man-overboard position.

Post-Operation Care and Routine Maintenance

Post-Trip Cleaning:Thoroughly rinse the entire boat with fresh water, paying special attention to the engine (cooling passages), stainless steel fittings, and the inflatable tubes. Flush the engine with fresh water using earmuffs or a flush port. Wash the convertible sunbathing mat and deck with a mild soap solution. Remove all gear and dry storage compartments to prevent mildew.

Regular Maintenance Schedule:

• Engine: Follow the engine manufacturer's strict maintenance schedule for oil changes, gear lube replacement, spark plug replacement, and fuel filter changes. Grease all fittings (steering, throttle linkage) as specified
