Safety operation procedures

1. Fundamental Mandatory Measures

• Kill Cord (Engine Cut-Off Switch): This is the single most critical safety device. It must be securely attached to the helmsman's person before starting the engine and remain attached at all times while underway. Its sole function is to stop the engine if the helmsman is displaced. Test its function regularly and never operate the boat without it correctly engaged.

• Lifejackets (Personal Flotation Devices - PFDs): While regulations vary, it is strongly advised that all persons on board wear a properly fitted, certified lifejacket at all times when on deck or in the cockpit, especially children and non-swimmers. Stowed lifejackets provide no protection in a sudden emergency.

• Sober Operation: Alcohol and drugs severely impair judgment, balance, and reaction time. The helmsman must abstain completely. All passengers should be made aware of the heightened risks of impairment on the water.

• Effective Lookout & Safe Speed: The helmsman is responsible for maintaining a constant 360-degree watch for other traffic, swimmers, and hazards. Speed must always be appropriate to the conditions: sea state, visibility, traffic density, and proximity to shore. High speed in congested areas or poor conditions is a primary cause of accidents.

2. Pre-Departure Checklist

Conduct these checks systematically before every trip:

• Weather & Planning: Obtain a detailed marine weather forecast (wind, waves, tide). File a float plan with someone ashore detailing your destination, route, and expected return time.

• Boat Condition: Visually inspect the fiberglass hull for new damage. Check the inflatable tube pressure and integrity for signs of abrasion or leaks.

• Engine & Fuel: Check engine oil and coolant levels. Ensure you have sufficient fuel for the journey plus a significant reserve (minimum 1/3). Verify the fuel system for leaks.

• Weight & Balance: Do not exceed the maximum person or weight capacity. Distribute passengers and gear evenly to maintain optimal trim and stability. Avoid overloading the bow or stern.

• Safety Equipment: Verify the presence and condition of all mandatory and recommended safety gear: PFDs, fire extinguisher(s), visual/audible distress signals, first-aid kit, anchor with rode, bilge pump(s), VHF radio, and drinking water.

• Systems Check: Briefly test navigation lights, horn, and VHF radio. Ensure the cabin and deck drains are clear.

3. Operational Procedures Underway

• Passenger Management: Brief all passengers on safety basics: location of equipment, "hold on" points, and behavior. Ensure everyone is seated in designated positions while the boat is planing or in choppy seas.

• Communication: Maintain a listening watch on VHF Channel 16 and use appropriate channels for bridge-to-bridge communication in busy areas.

• Docking & Manoeuvring: Approach docks and other boats at a controlled, slow speed. Be mindful of wind and current. Use brief, gentle throttle inputs when maneuvering in close quarters.

After Each Use (Post-Trip)

• Engine Flush: After use in saltwater, connect a freshwater flushing device and run the engine as per the manufacturer's instructions to purge salt from the cooling system.

• Freshwater Rinse: Thoroughly rinse the entire boat—hull, tubes, deck, and console—with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and debris.

• Interior Care: Wipe down the helm, instruments, and seating. Ventilate the cabin and any storage lockers to prevent mildew. Clean the integrated sink and tap if used.

• Mechanical Check: Check engine oil, coolant, and power trim fluid levels. Inspect the propeller for damage. Examine steering system connections and hydraulic lines for wear or leaks.

• Boat Inspection: Check tube pressure. Inspect tube material and hull for new damage, stress cracks, or UV degradation. Test the automatic bilge pump function.

• Battery & Electric: Check battery terminals for corrosion and ensure connections are tight. Verify all electrical systems and lights are operational.

Seasonal / Annual or Every 100-200 Hours

• Professional Engine Service: Adhere strictly to the engine manufacturer’s service intervals for tasks like oil/filter changes, gear lube replacement, spark plug replacement, and water pump impeller inspection. This is best performed by a qualified technician.

• Safety Gear Service: Inspect all lifejackets for wear. Check fire extinguisher pressure gauges and service/charge if needed. Replace expired distress signals.

• Hull & Tube Deep Care: Apply a quality marine wax to the fiberglass hull. Clean tubes with a manufacturer-approved cleaner and apply a UV protectant. Inspect all through-hull fittings and seacocks.

• Anode Inspection: Check and replace sacrificial zinc anodes on the engine(s) and hull if they are more than 50% eroded.

• Fuel System: Add a fuel stabilizer to a full tank or drain the fuel system completely to prevent stale fuel and condensation.

• Engine: Perform end-of-season engine service. Flush with anti-freeze if in freezing climates.

• Water Systems: Completely drain the freshwater tank, integrated sink lines, and any optional toilet/holding tank.

• Tubes & Support: Deflate tubes slightly (to ~80% pressure) to relieve constant tension. Store the boat on a proper support cradle, covered with a breathable cover.
